The emails prompt me to revisit too, haha! I am going to save the address in my bookmarks cause i so lazy and forget where the forum is, and then my mind drifts to something else and I totally blank. Yes, I do have ADD, lol!
Hey Lady Arwen, pleasure to meet you! I don't think i've actually introduced myself. Not recently, anyway, heh heh. So, my name is Mírwen Lindorië Greenleaf, (my cosplay character is the daughter of Legolas & Arwen in an AU. Cheesy I know, but I was 13 at the time of its invention, and it seemed different enough).
Lets see....I am a fan of all things Elvish, my fav character is Elrond Peredhel (cause he totally rocks), followed by Finrod Felagund, Fingolfin, Beleg Strongbow, Mablung the Hunter, Fingon and Turgon, and Maglor & Legolas (kind of).
My interests include translating random songs into elvish, jumping on giant hobbit trampolines, playing make-believe, watching Star Trek and Smallville, eating pasta with parmesian cheese, sketching pictures of fairies, reading very long DC comic books at Barnes and Noble, playing violin very badly, looking up flubs in Disney movies, and singing opera. Very loudly. In French and Italian. It's quite fun, u should try it sometime!
Other fandoms I like/know-too-much-about are: Narnia, Star Trek, Star Wars, DC and Marvel comics, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Jane Austen novels, The Phantom of the Opera, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King, Redwall, and The Wizard of Oz.
Yeah notice theres no Harry Potter or Twilight on here....i'm a go with the flow as long as its not mainstream sorta person, I think. Yep, i'm a rebel. 8)

Well they were all horrifyingly scrawled in my awful handwriting, lol! But I shall look for them and when I find them i'll type them up and post them on here. They were mostly all songs from the musical, Les Miserables. I have "On My Own", "Castle on a Cloud", "Stars" some of "At The End of the Day", "Fantine's Death", "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and the finale.
I know they're lying around gathering dust somewhere...but they are quite interesting. Despite the fact that I um *cough* used both Quenya AND Sindarin in the lyrics. So when I say Elvish, I use the term very collectively, heh heh...

Ha ha. Well, it would STILL be interesting (on top of my not even knowing the original songs). The titles of those songs sound like they might even fit into the realm of Middle-earth too.

Well, if you have a book like the red language book put together by Ruth.S Noel (I think that's her name) with a whole list of canon elven words, it's easier. Without that, translating is a bit rough. I just now did the first stanza for America's national anthem....the third line isn't as accurate as i'd like it to be, but here it is:
Ai pedo lye palan
An minuial gal
Man maethor thavron
Na i undome vedui glîn?
Oh say [can] you see
By [the] light of the dawn
What warriors behold
At the twilight's last gleaming?
Yeah...apparently there's no word for 'hail' in elvish. Or 'we'. I'd better look that up later, cause I coulda sworn Galadriel said some Quenya poem in the book that had that in it......
At any rate, i'm proud of the last line, cause it's actually a literal translation. YAY! Most was taken directly from Glorfindel's little "Ai! Na vedui Dunadan" exclaimation, and we all know Undome means Twilight, lol!

I think "aaye" or "aia" or something like that is "hail." But don't take my word for it...

Haha, aia....it does sound like a 'Hey you!" sorta thing. Along the lines of Ai and Ele!
Hmmm...maybe I should change it to Ele instead of Thavron. Cause that might be fake elvish. Fake elvish annoys me to no end. ;D If it's not in the books or in Tolkien's writing, it really shouldn't be canon...that's why the movies are like 'what? What in the world did they just say?'. I mean, some stuff coming out of Legolas's mouth...I swear it has no meaning in any language, lol!

Well it is correct in a sense, but definitely not accurate. For instance, "Anirion" means 'Desire" in the movie, right? Like with the whole love song by enya and all. Well, the only time the word 'Desire" is mentioned in the books is in the silmarillion, where Irmo's name is translated as either 'dreams' or 'desire' or something. So while I assume 'ir' means desire, and 'ion' could be a masculine suffix, where in the world does the 'an' come from? I swear they are making stuff up!
And in TTT Legolas is telling Aragorn the odds in elvish, and he translates the number of uruks as something that sounds like 'din cal aman ik." Whatever he actually said, it sounded an awful lot like 'silent light good __ " which is definitely not "7,000" or "5,000". I'm not sure Tolkien even set up a lot of numbers in elvish. There's 'Er', which means one as in the sense of being alone, or the last one left, and I think there's a two or three in the Fëanorian script letter names...but there isn't an accurate translation for '5000'. At all. So I don't know what they used, or where it came from...but it bugs me sometimes, lol!

DO IT! Lol! Most of Arwen and Elrond's lines seem to be okay, Aragorn and Legolas tend to be the ones who confuse me, heehee! I know when Arwen first shows up she says "Im Arwen[...] lasto beth nin, (tol ten?) un galad" Which is translated as "I'm Arwen, [i've come to help you] listen to me, come back to the light." I think it's literally this though "I Arwen, [...] listen to my words, (come back to) the light. Elrond repeats the phrase when he's healing Frodo (without the 'I'm Arwen" of course, lol!) I think they got the Lasto Beth Nin from Gandalf's command to the gates of Moria, "Lasto Beth Lammon" (listen to the words of my tongue)
While we're on this note, there's something I found quite fascinating about the translation on the gates of Moria. We all know that it says "Speak, friend, and enter", right? Well, the elven word for Speak, whether 'Pedo' OR 'Quel/Quet, ALSO means 'Say'. So it's not even a riddle at all! It really should be translated as "The gates of Dúrin, Lord of Moria. Say friend, and enter"!
Just something I thought was cool! ;D
