Ok.. I have seen that alot of images in these contests just seemingly 'disappear'. They also might have a box with a red X in it. I am thinking this is mainly because of the host you are linking it to. Here are some good free image hosts.
Photobucket - This is a good image host. I can only think of two downfalls. One, you must register and there are only spacific times you can (last time I looked). Two, there have been times where the images have gone down and you can't see them. This doesn't mean it is a bad image host. It is actually really good.
TinyPic - This is one that most people use today. I found it rather nice. You don't have to register, but the only thing I can think of is the image won't stay up for a really long time. I used it, then after a while the image just wasn't there anymore. Though, this should be fine for contests. Also, I am thinking this server has gone down before.
ImageShack - This is the one I use now. It is really good, and I recommend it. It will keep images up there like forever, or at least none of mine have failed yet. Some have been up there for like a year! The only disadvantage is the link is sometimes really long so may take up room in your signature.
