Remember how in the Return of The King, Gandalf said to Denethor that he too was a steward? I was wondering, how is Gandalf a steward?

Hmm that is a really good question. I never caught that. Is it in the movie too?

Nope. I think it was only in the books that he said that...

I don't know if this answers it. But I happened upon an article today that said the following- "Gandalf is leader of the free and the faithful. He is steward of all things good in the world, but he claims rule over no land."

Aye. Maybe Gandalf wasn't speaking in technical terms, as in he wasn't saying he truly WAS a steward just a light term perhaps...

Gandalf is a Maia. Basically, he's steward to the Valar.

From my interpretation, Gandalf is a Steward, but not in a literal sense. He is not "appointed" to any land, but he's the Steward of all of Middle Earth, as FRODOFAN said. Funny I noticed this just now, since I just read that part in the book this morning.
